The Elizabeth Harris Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition by William Carroll titled living in the city. This will be his seventh exhibition with the gallery. The exhibition will include grisaille views of the city as in his last show, in addition to a new series of paintings of building silhouettes in color.
“The artist continues his walks through the city with a marker and memo pad making quick drawings from which he makes the paintings. There will a catalogue accompanying the exhibition, with an essay by David Ebony, who writes: “The fundamental attributes of city living are quickly changing, and for that reason alone, William Carroll’s tightly focused and deliberately understated tributes to New York City – its buildings, streets, signposts, waterways, and bridges – demand attention. The acrylic on wood panel paintings and the works on paper that he has produced since 2007, harbor a new sense of urgency, relevance and significance today. The pictures have a meditative function as they impart a welcome sense of order to a city in transition and convey a feeling of contemplative calm to the often-chaotic urban scene.” from the catalog essay by David Ebony
William Carroll was born in the Bronx and has been a resident of the East Village for forty years. He received his BFA from Pratt Institute and then spent the 1970s in San Francisco. Bill has worked in arts administration at the Dia Art Foundation, The Brooklyn Museum, Charles Cowles Gallery, Elizabeth Harris Gallery, and recently retired as Director of the EFA Studio Program. For the past 13 years he has taught a Professional Practice to MFA students at Pratt Institute.
The Gallery is located at 529 West 20th Street, 6th floor, and is open Tuesday through Saturday 12 – 6 pm. The artist will be present for an opening reception on Saturday, January 6th, from 12-6 pm.
